Learning CenterBefore accepting insurance-funded equipment
Equipment that solves today’s problem may not solve the next one. Before accepting an insurance-funded item, slow down long enough to consider fit, function, safety, service, and how needs may change.
Start with function—not a product name
Describe what is difficult inside the home, what assistance is available, where falls or fatigue occur, and what the equipment must make safer. A diagnosis alone rarely describes the entire functional need.
Ask what may change
- Is strength, balance, endurance, posture, skin integrity, breathing, or cognition expected to change?
- Could the equipment still be adjusted or supported if those needs change?
- Will it fit through doors, around furniture, in the bathroom, and in the available vehicle?
- Who will provide setup, training, repair, and replacement parts?
Understand coverage consequences
Insurance programs may apply replacement timelines or same-or-similar rules. Ask the supplier and insurer how accepting this item could affect later eligibility for another item. Obtain plan-specific answers before delivery or assignment.
Know when to request an evaluation
Complex mobility, seating, positioning, pressure management, transfers, respiratory needs, or progressive conditions may require evaluation by a physician, therapist, seating clinic, Assistive Technology Professional, respiratory clinician, or another qualified professional.
